“Because of Buffalo State, I know how to work with all types of students and colleagues in a productive way.”
While working as a full-time teacher, Jessica Cruz realized she wanted to learn how to teach all types of students, including those with disabilities, so she decided to pursue a degree in exceptional education. She chose Buffalo State because it offered a quality education that fit into her busy schedule at an affordable price.
Cruz felt that the course content was related to real-life teaching experiences that prepared her to implement new practices in her classroom. She advises future teacher candidates, “You have to want to improve each year, build upon what you learned, and be willing to put in the time to perfect your craft. You have to understand that students come to you at all different levels and with many life circumstances, but you have to meet them where they are.”
The exceptional education program allowed Cruz to make connections with other teachers, including those who also worked in Niagara County. She recognized that her network could help her achieve her professional goals. “Always present yourself in a professional and positive light- you never know when a connection can lead to a great career opportunity.”
Now the Director of the Lancer Learning Center at Lewiston-Porter High School, Cruz wants to continue to develop a space for all students to excel, especially with the impact that the pandemic has had on their schooling. After her experience at Buffalo State, Cruz has all the tools to reach her students.
