Sauerzopf will receive the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence during the 10:00 a.m. baccalaureate ceremony at Buffalo State’s 142nd Commencement, Saturday, May 17, in the Sports Arena.
An outstanding example of a student who can ably balance academic coursework with student service, athletics, community service, and career achievement, Sauerzopf is tireless in his pursuit of excellence. In the classroom, he is a fast learner with highly developed communication, problem-solving, and decision-making skills. He earned SUNY Athletic Conference All-Academic Team honors each semester of his college career.
Outside the classroom, he is a natural leader dedicated to serving others. As the elected student body president, he oversaw a $1.4 million budget and represented the college at the 2013 Student Assembly of the State University of New York conference. He has been lauded for running a student government with a direct business focus that meets student needs and efficiently operates campus activities. In addition, he has served on numerous college committees, contributing to positive solutions on issues ranging from parking and transportation to alumni activity.
In the community, Sauerzopf is an Eagle Scout and a longtime member of the Boy Scouts organization, providing more than 300 hours of service in the past year while mentoring younger scouts. As a member of Buffalo State’s award-winning chapter of Best Buddies, he established friendships with intellectually disabled children and adults, and as an organizer of Kids Night Out, he worked with local children as a representative of the college’s Intercollegiate Athletics Department.
In short, Sauerzopf recognizes opportunities to lead and is willing to devote his time and energy to improving the student experience at Buffalo State and the quality of life in his community.
